For those of you who like to go the do-it-yourself route, here are the tools to make your PNG code go (some of which may also be provided with ready-to-go executables). Some of the code, particularly by members of the PNG Development Group, is still kept up to date at the primary Open Source Lab ftp site, but for most things check the appropriate PNG Applications pages for current links. This page was previously called Code from the PNG Development Group and later PNG Source Code and Libraries. Now it is simply a list of applications, libraries and toolkits that include source code, with more complete descriptions on the relevant PNG applications pages. The following programming libraries, toolkits, DLLs and Java classes all include source code and are listed on the toolkits page. Operating-system support is listed in (parenthesized italics), and toolkits that do not derive their PNG support from another listed library (typically libpng)–although they may or may not require zlib–are so noted.

Each sub-block begins with a byte giving the number of subsequent data bytes in the sub-block (1 to 255). The series of sub-blocks is terminated by an empty sub-block (a 0 byte). This structure allows the file to be parsed even if not all parts are understood. A GIF marked 87a may contain extension blocks; the intent is that a decoder can read and display the file without the features covered in extensions it does not understand. The full detail of the file format is covered in the GIF specification. GIF is palette-based: the colors used in an image (a frame) in the file have their RGB values defined in a palette table that can hold up to 256 entries, and the data for the image refer to the colors by their indices (0-255) in the palette table. The color definitions in the palette can be drawn from a color space of millions of shades (224 shades, 8 bits for each primary), but the maximum number of colors a frame can use is 256. This limitation was reasonable when GIF was developed because hardware that could display more than 256 colors simultaneously was rare.

UTF-16 (16-bit Unicode Transformation Format) is a character encoding capable of encoding all 1,112,064 valid code points of Unicode (in fact this number of code points is dictated by the design of UTF-16). The encoding is variable-length, as code points are encoded with one or two 16-bit code units. CJK characters such as for personal and place names. UTF-16 is used by systems such as the Microsoft Windows API, the Java programming language and JavaScript/ECMAScript. It is also sometimes used for plain text and word-processing data files on Microsoft Windows. It is used by more modern implementations of SMS. 0.003% of web pages. UTF-8, by comparison, accounts for over 98% of all web pages. In the late 1980s, work began on developing a uniform encoding for a “Universal Character Set” (UCS) that would replace earlier language-specific encodings with one coordinated system. The goal was to include all required characters from most of the world’s languages, as well as symbols from technical domains such as science, mathematics, and music.

Standard foglamps and TRX suspension continued, but the package was no longer available with optional V-8 (sensible with the weaker 255 engine), and its price was up by $309, to $1482. As before, a big hood snake decal was available separately (at $88, up $10). Mustang. The 200-cid six was also widely ignored, doubtless because it was so familiar (old, in other words) and far from exotic: seven-main-bearing crankshaft, overhead valves with hydraulic lifters, cast-iron block, a simple one-barrel carburetor. Even so, the straight six still had a place in 1980, being efficient and easy to live with. It had less horsepower than the V-6 it replaced but compensated with greater displacement and torque, so “real-world” performance wasn’t that different. And by Ford’s “Cost-of-Ownership” formula, where required maintenance for the first 50,000 miles was averaged according to dealer parts and labor prices, the inline six cost less to operate than the V-6, an appreciated plus for inflation-weary buyers.
